Day 14 - A Day Off!

As Alan is heading home today, we are bravely taking up the task of continuing the blog (so expect a drop in quality!). Alan will be posting Day 12 and 13 from Canada, when he has a moment.

Friday (Day 14) was a quiet ‘todo list’ day - Alan had to book a replacement flight (not as easy as it sounds) and some supplies needed to be purchased.  Since this was a slow day, we will take this opportunity to post a few photos (at the end) that didn’t make it into earlier posts (because they were not available at the time).

We said goodbye to Alan with a pizza dinner served by the pool, followed by a campfire.

More water, snacks, and beer.

No caption necessary......

Thankfully the bugs only attacked the light!

Now a few throw back pics:
Back on Day 8, Matt was presented with a cake for his 19th birthday. Followed by dozens of children expertly singing ‘Happy Birthday to You’.

On Day 9, Jeff, Matt and Alan were invited to join a local soccer game (I bruised a toe early that day and used that as an excuse to just take some pics!). The game was fast and competitive but Canada was well represented!

On Day 10, Jeff, Matt and Dan helped build an interior wall at the big kids dorms. Everything here is done by hand with very basic tools. Our job was to make sure the workers laying the brick had what they needed and when they needed it. We were not always successful……
While we went back for lunch and a swim before returning to the site, the workers stop for a few minutes to suck on sugar cane and then continued the job!

Julius instructs Jeff on wall building (note Jeff is sweating, but Julius is wearing a toque)
Once the wall is half done, they build scaffolding to continue.

Getting close to the finish.

Later that day we took a group shot in front of the wall that the girls had been painting (and that the boys put some finishing touches on!).

One thing that always happens on trips is the photographer rarely gets in the pictures. So here are a couple of pictures of Alan …….. taking pictures.
Photographing the locals

And as is customary - showing the results.
When Alan wasn’t dealing with the clinic, or taking pictures, he was pressed into duty bailing out our leaking boat on the way to Chimpanzee Island!

Tomorrow we are lucky enough to have a local organization lend us two bouncy castles to use for the day at BKU. Stay tuned!
