Day 12a - splish splash

Darn it all - once again too many pics so I'm breaking this day's blog into two parts.
I'm not sure who's idea it was, but the notion of bringing the BKU kids to the Banana Village swimming pool was certainly a brilliant one!

Our friend, Rich, from the Texas soccer group and Angel help get the little one's started

slow start, and lot's of hesitation
I am tied up at the clinic for a few minutes assessing Omar who has an abscess on the front part of his knee causing a lot of pain.  I am concerned about possible joint involvement with the infection so I ask Rose to start him on IV antibiotics and plan to assess him later.

The kids are remarkably hesitant about entering the little pool.  Admittedly, the water is a little cool and they have never been swimming before.  Sue thinks Sonyu and Sandra will be the bravest, based on their apparent love of splashing around while bathing, but it is actually Patience and QT who are the first to get going.

Obama is such a serious child sporting a worried expression most times, but we actually see him grin once he decides the pool is not such a bad thing.

Patience and QT actually spend some time in the big pool, which is quite intimidating because the shallow end is over 4 feet deep

Many of the kids are shivering and obviously tired yet still reluctant to come out of the water.  Don, who is last to get into the pool, is also last coming out because he's having far too much fun.

When it comes to the bigger young kids who are brought over after finishing school and lunch, it's an entirely different matter.  They have been fully briefed by their peers and have no reluctance to strip down and wade into the water immediately.

I return to the clinic and examine Omar once again.  Satisfied there is no evidence of infection spreading deeper to the joint, I take a scalpel and open up the abscess, squeezing out a moderate amount of pus.  This is obviously painful for the poor little guy, and we applaud his bravery.  Sue can't help but give him a motherly hug and snuggle.
